Getting Started & The Legacy Process

We understand how overwhelming remodeling and building projects can be, but the team at Legacy Countertops is here to help.
Come by our showroom to meet with us in person, or call or email your project details to us.

  • Step 1 – Measure Your Space

Use our easy-to-use worksheet to draw a rough sketch of your project. Measure each edge of your existing countertops or cabinets (including angles), and indicate the location and size of sinks, stove/range cutouts, backsplash, etc. If you have house plans or cabinet drawings, you can bring those instead. Photos are also helpful. You don’t have to have every decision made, however the more we know upfront, the more accurate your estimate will be.

  • Step 2 – Select Your Materials

An appointment is encouraged, but walk-ins are always welcome. It’s helpful to bring any materials you’ve already chosen for your project, including cabinet doors, flooring, backsplash tile, paint colors, wallpaper, etc., in addition to your project measurements.

During the selection meeting, our experienced team will walk you through our inventory of slabs and remnants, explain the difference between natural stone and engineered stone, and assist you with design and color choices. If we don’t have what you’re looking for onsite, we’ll refer you to a nearby stone supplier. We choose only the highest quality materials, and we only work with stone suppliers who are considered to be the best in the industry.

  • Step 3 – Estimate

Based on your measurements and initial selection meeting, we’ll put together a detailed estimate for your desired stone selections, edge profile, backsplash and sink type. Our estimates include material, templating, fabrication and installation – and all sink/cooktop cutouts and other charges are shown up front, so there are no hidden fees.

Once materials are finalized, customers will be asked to confirm the price and make a deposit. We will then schedule a date to template your countertops.

  • Step 4 – Final Measure & Templating

We’ll visit the job site to verify the exact dimensions and square footage of your project. Before we arrive, cabinets must be installed, and all appliances, faucets and sinks must be on site (unless purchased from Legacy Countertops). Farm sinks must be installed prior to template. Any modifications to edge profile, seam location, backsplash, sink/range cutouts, overhangs and other custom details must be confirmed at this time, so all decision-makers should be present during the appointment. If adjustments to the original estimate are required, a new estimate will be provided for customer approval.

Next, a technician will create a pattern of your countertops – called a template – to be used during fabrication. No changes may be made after this step.

Once the template is complete, customers are welcome to come back to our showroom to choose which part of the slab or remnant to make the focal point before the countertops are cut.

  • Step 5 – Fabrication

The countertops are cut in our facility by our experienced team, and the finishing details are added by hand. All field seams are placed at the discretion of Legacy Countertops.

We strive to offer a 7-10 day turnaround from template to install. Keep in mind that fabrication may take longer for large projects and/or during the holidays.

  • Step 6 – Installation

The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived.

Our installation team is comprised of talented individuals who have many years of experience in the industry and the knowledge to install your tops with precision and confidence.

Here are some tips to make installation day run smoothly:

    • The installation for an average kitchen can take anywhere from 4-8 hours, and 1-2 hours for a typical bathroom.
    • Before we arrive, remove all breakables, valuables and obstructions from the work areas, including items under sinks and cooktops.
    • The stone is very heavy, so our installers need a clear walking path from where they park their trucks, to your doorway, and through your home to the installation areas.
    • For safety, keep children and yourself away from the access path and work areas. Pets must be crated or securely locked in another part of the house to ensure their safely and reduce the stress of strangers, loud noises and dangerous equipment.
    • An adult over 18-years-old MUST be present and able to make decisions and approve the countertop details.
    • If we are not removing your existing countertops, they must be removed in advance.
    • All plumbing, electrical and gas cooktops must be disconnected before the installers begin. If not completed, we will disconnect them for a fee (review plumbing and gas notes below).
    • If you require countertop supports for an overhang (and have not purchased them from Legacy Countertops), they must be installed in advance.
    • The installation process requires the use of epoxies, silicones and sealers. We recommend that individuals who are sensitive to these products and/or their fumes not be present during installation. Opening doors and windows can help with ventilation.
    • In some cases, sink and cooktop cutouts and minor adjustments are necessary. This may require the use of wood or plastic shims – in other cases, our installation team may need to cut, grind or polish the stone inside your home. While we try to minimize the amount of noise and dust, customers may want to cover furniture and flooring, and move important items that may be affected by the dust. Do NOT place plastic on the floors.
    • While our installation team will take the utmost care and precaution, please be aware that scratches and dents to walls, cabinets, floors and nearby items are rare, but possible. These items are considered incidental damage and are the customer’s responsibility to repair.
    • We apply a standard sealer to all granite and marble countertops at the time of installation. Engineered stone countertops (i.e. quartz and recycled) do not require sealing. If you’ve purchased Dry Treat 15-year Superior Sealer, the installers will apply it instead (review sealer notes below).
    • Upon completion of your project, our installers will do a basic cleaning and then review your project for inspection and sign-off.
    • Final payment is due. Please give your payment (payable via check or cash) to the installers.
    • If you experience any issues during the installation process, please contact your salesperson to discuss.

Important Notes

Plumbing Disconnect

Plumbing must be disconnected when the installers arrive, so be sure to schedule your plumber the day before your installation appointment. If you’ve hired Legacy Countertops to remove your existing countertops, our installers will disconnect the plumbing prior to install.

Gas Cooktop Disconnect

If you have a gas cooktop, it must be disconnected the day before your install date. Generally speaking, we can work around other gas appliances. If you have questions, please ask your designer.

Plumbing, Gas & Appliance Reconnect

Legacy Countertops installers cannot reconnect plumbing, gas or electrical; this must be done by a licensed plumber or electrician. If you’ve hired Legacy Countertops to do reconnect your sink, our plumber will contact you directly to arrange a day and time. Keep in mind that if your garbage disposal is more than 10-years-old and/or is not working properly, this would be a good time to replace it.

IMPORTANT NOTE: After installation, please allow at least 24 hours for the countertops and sinks to set before reconnecting any plumbing, utilities or appliances.

Shower Thresholds, Benches & Wall Cap Installation

We can fabricate shower seats, shelves, thresholds and other shower-related items, however, they must be installed by a tile installer or contractor who works with waterproof adhesives and grout.

Dry Treat 15-Year Sealer

Dry Treat sealer provides water and oil repellence for superior stain protection, and it helps stone retain its natural surface color and finish. If you’ve paid for Dry Treat, our installers will apply it after installation. Please do not set anything on top of your counters for 24 hours after application.

Backsplash Tile Installation

The countertops, epoxies and sealers all need time to set up after installation. We recommend waiting a minimum of 48 hours after your counters are installed to begin work on your tile backsplash. Remember to cover your countertops to protect them during the tile installation.
